Yesterday marked the 75th anniversary of The New York Times publishing its first crossword, and I thought I’d delve into NYT crossword history a bit to commemorate this event!. On February 15, 1942, The New York Times ran its first Sunday edition crossword. (The daily feature as we know it wouldn’t come into effect until 1950.)

I started my personal crossword blog in November 2007, and began coding my statistics site, XWord Info, that same year, never imagining that it would be a gateway to writing for The New York Times. I love writing and I love puzzles of all sorts, so a crossword blog seemed like a good idea. Gary Antonick, who has created or edited over 100 logic and math puzzles for The New York Times, secretly believes every math problem can be solved using circles and straight lines. He is a visiting scholar at Stanford University, where he studies mathematical problem solving. SPECIAL POST — Good news: Beginning today, the newly redesigned New York Times Magazine has an extra half-page of puzzles, making two pages altogether.
